Her mother was a domestic worker and her father was employed as a used car dealer. Her mother arrived in the United States in 1958, in the form of an immigrant from Germany. After ten long years of fight against breast cancer, she passed away in the year 1989. Handler was born into a Reform Judaism family. Her father was Jewish. Handler enjoyed a happy good, healthy and safe childhood in a good neighbourhood. As she entered her twenties she moved in Los Angeles in order to pursue acting. Handler was forced to become an actress to make ends meet. Handler's ability to write stories came into play at the age of 21. Handler then decided to make a full-time commitment to stand-up comedy. At the beginning of her career Handler started out her career as a member of the Oxygen network all-female cast for the hidden camera/comedy reality television series Girls Behaving Poorly. This show aired from 2002 until 2005. The host began to appear on different shows such including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working as a corresponded to The Tonight Show. Handler received her first big break as she hosted her E! Show in 2006. called The Chelsea Handler show. The show lasted for two seasons. Handler was then seen in the United States on Comedy Central Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour. The stand-up shows she has performed have been aired by VH1, Comedy Central's Premium Blend as well as HBO. In 2010, it was confirmed that she would be hosting for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. It was only the second woman to ever host VMAs, after Roseanne Bar.
